Air
Majority of big cities in Ukraine has air connection with Kiev. Tickets for domestic flights for non-Ukrainians might be more expensive than for Ukrainians. Best air connection with other countries goes via Kiev.
Some domestic flights are not very reliable in terms of schedule - it is a good idea to make sure that the flight you have chosen is made on regular basis.
Please, note most domestic air tickets can be obtained in Ukraine only.
Train
Extensive network of railroad connects Ukraine with many European and Asian countries. Trains are cheap though slow and not very comfortable. First class compartments are mostly air-conditioned (very important in summertime) and have 2 berths (some trains do not have 1st class option), second class has 4 berths. We recommend to buy tickets for the whole compartment, especially when traveling alone. Prices for foreign citizens and Ukrainians are the same. Trains are the most popular and easy way to make intercity trips in Ukraine.
Sea
The major part of sea connection is made via the Black sea ports of Odessa, Sevastopol and Yalta. The passenger vessels sailing between the Crimea peninsula and Odessa do not have stable schedule and rates, currently. Therefore tickets for these cruises and ferries are hardly bookable. The major part of ferries serves Istanbul, Turkey destination. They provide with several categories of accommodation, meals, entertainment programs, etc. On the top of it, ferries make cargo transportation including cars, vans etc.
Public city transport
Operates from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Bus, trolley bus and tram system is rather slow, but is a cheap way to travel within cities. Prices range from 1 to 2 hryvnas.
Taxi is comparatively cheap for Russian speaking passengers. Probably everywhere situation with taxi is like this - if one speaks a foreign language price for taxi goes up immediately. There are numerous taxi services, orders are taken via phone. There can be hired a taxi right on the street simply by putting out your hand. Be wary of taking a car having more than one passenger. Price is to be agreed upon beforehand.
More information
Domestic air travel, being the fastest and easiest way of transportation, covers quite a few destinations in Ukraine. There is a permanent air connection from/to Kiev with Dniepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Lugansk, Lviv, Mariupol, Odessa, Simferopol and Uzhgorod. Transportation between other cities can be made by trains only.
Most domestic flights are made from the Zhulyany (IEV) domestic airport in Kiev.
For Ukrainian domestic flights schedule, please, see Kiev flight schedule. These are the only domestic flights made in Ukraine.
Internal air tickets are bookable 30 days prior to the departure date. Before this term tickets are not available. Most domestic air carriers sell their flights in Ukraine only.
These tickets can be booked with Tartus-Tour Ltd. For making a booking, please, fill the air tickets booking request.
The best time to travel via air in Ukraine is the end of spring, summer and beginning of fall. The reason is that only small weather sensitive aircrafts, such as Yak-40 and An-24, serve domestic destinations. In the wintertime the flights are cancelled or delayed quite often. Therefore we would recommend to travel by trains from mid of October till mid of April to make your trips up to schedule.
